Dr. Burns holds a B.S. from S.U.N.Y. Binghamton in Biochemistry and a Ph.D. in Biology (Genetics and Neural Development) from University of Pittsburgh. As a biologist, she is strongly committed to environmental preservation and sustainable economic development. Service to Appalachian Cottage Industries is a part of that commitment. She has taught for many years at Kent State University East Liverpool Campus.

Dr. Burns also serves on the boards of the Associate Degree in Nursing Program, East Liverpool-Wellsville N.A.A.C.P., Leading Economic and Educational Progress, Alliance for Better Living in East Liverpool, and is President of the East Liverpool Lions Club.
